Title: "Alone"
The title has a denotative meaning, Poe goes into detail about his feelings of loneliness and sorrow.
Paraphrase:
Since he was a child he was not like everyone else, hasn't seen what others seen, and couldn't feel the passions as others could. He couldn't feel the pain and sorrow as others could. He couldn't feel happiness as others could. Everything he loved was taken. In his childhood, his pain started. All happiness was taken and kept him in depression. It didn't matter where it came from there was always pain that followed him.
Connotations:
" In the dawn of a most stormy life" means- in the beginning of a sad and hard life. The dawn is the beginning, and the storm is his burdens through life he has to deal with.
"From every depth of good and ill the mystery which binds me still" means- everywhere that there was good OR bad pain swallowed him, and the mystery of why he had to suffer locked him in his depression.
From the thunder and the storm, and the cloud that took the form (when the rest of Heaven was blue) Of a demon in my view" means- Even though it seemed a happy day resembled by the blue sky, there was still pain resembled by the cloud of thunder and storm, which also took the form of a demon further making his point.
Attitude: Hopeless, Depressed, Lonely.
Poe does not hope to ever to be accepted, "From childhood's hour I have not been as others were"
Almost the whole poem could prove Poe's depressed attitude but this part especially, "Then- in my childhood, in the dawn of a most stormy life- was drawn from every depth of good and ill the mystery which binds me still" It is shown through the use of the words, "most stormy life" and "which binds me still". He wasn't happy from a young age and he feels he can never leave his sadness.
He is lonely, for all of those he has ever truly loved died, "and all I loved, I loved alone"
Shifts:
There is a small shift halfway through the poem. It starts at, "Then- in my childhood, in the dawn of a most stormy life- was drawn" right after these two lines, Poe speaks very figuratively where before, it was mostly literal.
Title Again:
After reviewing the title, I realized that behind the obvious literal meanings, there were also figurative meanings. It previews the sadness and loneliness that is ahead in the poem.
Theme:
"Life may have good days, but there is always a hint of darkness waiting to catch you off guard."
